Teachers’ understanding of student agency when learning with AI
AI technologies have increasingly been integrated into school classrooms in many parts of the world. Yet, little is known about how we might ensure not only effective but also ethical and sustainable use of AI technologies in the classroom environment. In particular, there is no consensus on what form of human (teacher)-AI collaboration is optimal and sustainable when AI is used in the classroom environment. As well, many studies in the area come from North America with little insight from other parts of the world.
We have been conductiing design-based studies with school teachers in Germany to better and deeply understand how school teachers feel and perceive the use of AI technologies in the classroom context and how they view themselves in the complex environment where AI, students, and teachers would interact with each other. We have designed and used several storyboards/scenarios to illustrate hypothetical AI use in the classroom context (as AI has not been fully used in German classrooms) to elicit insights from teachers.
