School students’ understanding of AI in the classroom
AI technologies have increasingly been integrated into school classrooms in many parts of the world. Yet, little is known about how we might ensure not only effective but also ethical and sustainable use of AI technologies in the classroom environment. In particular, how school students perceive such advanced technologies is largely under-explored.
We have conducted design-based studies with school students in Germany to better and deeply understand how school students feel and perceive the use of AI technologies in the classroom context. In these studies, we specifically focus on “student agency” (i.e., how much control students wish to own – as opposed to how much control they are willing to let AI takes). We have designed and used several storyboards/scenarios to illustrate hypothetical AI use in the classroom context (as AI has not been fully used in German classrooms) to elicit insights from school kids.
