Studies have found that students learn well when instruction follows the “concreteness fading” principle (i.e., that starts with concrete representations, then gradually becomes more abstract). However, the argument does not consider how important it is for students to make such choices (e.g., when to change to abstract representations).

We leverage intelligent learning technology to understand students’ fine-grained choice behaviors and how interventions on recommending vs. forcing certain choice patterns impact student learning. That is, we are testing whether giving students agency in making decisions on what to choose (from multiple concrete and abstract representations) makes a difference.
