Even though many students can solve linear systems of equations using three methods–equalization, substitution, and elimination–they do not necessarily have a good understanding of why and how each of these methods works in a conceptual way.Â
AlgeSPACE (Algebra Scaffolding with Pedagogical Agents and Concrete Examples) project started through a conversation with a high-school teacher in Germany where we discussed how we might create an interactive tool using concrete examples that teaches how to solve systems of equations.
The software (https://algespace.sic.saarland/) is freely available (in English and German) for teachers, students, and other education stakeholders for their own use.
